Summary0015593: GDPR concern about ads
DescriptionIssue type: Other
Reported from: [not specified]
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/75.0.3770.100 Safari/537.36
The site's cookie policy is not compliant with GDPR, as required for any site providing content within the EU.

It currently operates an opt-out policy - users have to manually select "manage settings", then have the option to disable a small number of companies manually, while many others require them to individually request an opt-out through third-party services. This is definitely a breach of the GDPR rules. "Consent requests must not rely on silence, inactivity, default settings, taking advantage of inattention or inertia, or default bias in any other way." https://www.itgovernance.eu/blog/en/gdpr-when-do-you-need-to-seek-consent "opt-out options “are essentially the same as pre-ticked boxes, which are banned”."

The site needs to promptly alter the way it handles cookies, especially those associated with providing advertising data to 3rd parties, as it's breaking EU law and liable for large fines. I'm a regular user and occasional editor - I don't want that happening.

It's not especially difficult; it just needs to be changed to an opt-out system. But the third-party permissions accumulators need to go.
