Description | Automated import from Google spreadsheet. Question for Baleful Polymorph: It says "Turns subject into harmless animal," but that's hardly the case. Unless you're subject is already harmless, this spell essentially turns subjects into animals with virtually unchanged physical stat blocks. If my High Level Caster, Baleful Polymorphs, say a High Level Barbarian with a Str of... 25? (starts with maybe a 17, adds 2 from race for a 19, puts 3 ability points from leveling for a 22, and maybe buys a book for the extra 3), and I want to make them a Diminutive Animal, they take a -4 to Str and retains all HD and BAB and other rudimentary Class Abilities. That now creates a Rat with a stupid High AC, and a Str of 21 (Beast Shape III only reduces Str by a -4, only subtracting 2 from the modifier), that can hit me at a BAB of roughly 12 or higher plus that 5. This spells creates tiny little super-warriors, unless used solely on civilians or casters, which is still negated, because Casters get high Will Saves, so they'd retain ALL mental scores, and now there's a Diminutive creature running around that can't be hit and can cast insanely powerful spells - since you keep all that stuff if you succeed the Will but fail the Fort. At what part of this spell does something legitimately become harmless? The Physical Monoliths stay Monoliths, and the Casters stay Casters. If anything, this Baleful Spell is a blessing for any capable (N)PC. A Monk could become a rabbit with a psychotically powerful Flurry of Blows and an even higher AC since the Dexterity goes up, and Monk saves are perfect. Where's the terrifying result of a spell here? Where's the Evil Caster turning someone into a real harmless animal and mortifying the other players and or DM? Where's the actual repercussion? At Level 11 when this spell is accessible there's usually enough gold and magic to give the Animal form the ability to talk and like 1/4th the gold needed to make teeny weeny Armor. Other than that -2 (or -1, or 0, depending on the size change) this Spell is a boon. | ||||
